PETALING JAYA: Matty Healy, the frontman of British band The 1975, overstepped his right to freedom of expression in his tirade against Malaysia's LGBT laws, says The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).

Suhakam chairman Datuk Dr Rahmat Mohamad condemned Healy's actions at the Good Vibes Festival, stating that he had disrespected local laws and Malaysian culture.

"While Suhakam advocates equality for all and freedom of expression, these rights must be practised responsibly and within restrictions imposed by local laws and cultural considerations," he said in a statement on Monday (July 24).

He said such restrictions were necessary to ensure national security and public order were maintained.

He also said Healy's questionable antics had caused severe economic impact to other artists and vendors.

"Throughout the years, Malaysia has successfully hosted numerous artists who have demonstrated respect for our local laws and cultural norms during their performances.

"We call upon all individuals to express themselves responsibly and refrain from engaging in acts of intolerance and hatred as embracing cultural diversity is essential for fostering harmony in our society," said Rahmat.
