Load shedding will prevent total blackout in Sabah, says SESB chief

KOTA KINABALU: Load shedding of the power supply in Sabah is expected to go on until July this year, says Mohd Yaakob Jaafar.

The Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) chief executive officer said this was due to higher usage and frequent generator breakdowns.

"SESB's main purpose is to prevent a total blackout and load shedding is one efficient way to ensure stable power supply to as many areas as possible," he said during a briefing on the current power supply situation on Friday (May 19).

Yaakob said utility companies try to ensure stable supply to 80-90% of consumers in the state during the load shedding operations.

He said the increased power demand is due to the hot weather, among other factors.

He said SESB personnel were on duty around the clock on a rotation basis to ensure that power supply remains as stable as possible.

Yaakob said SESB was also finding alternative power sources to meet the demands of industries and customers in Sabah.

"For Sabah, we have to focus load shedding on areas outside the main city as Kota Kinabalu is an economic and industrial focal point," he said.
