PETALING JAYA: The south-west monsoon is expected to begin on May 15 and continue until September.
The monsoon is forecast to bring in consistent strong winds from the south-west with air containing less moisture and more stable atmospheric conditions.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and the Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Ministry said in a joint statement the phenomenon would create fewer rain clouds.
"As such many areas in the country will experience more dry days than rainy days, (resulting in) less rainfall," they said on Tuesday (May 9).
However, downpours with strong winds and lightning (squall line) could still occur in the west coast of the peninsula and western Sabah, especially in the early mornings.
A squall line is a row of storms formed due to air concentration and could continue for hours.
The monsoon could also lead to haze from uncontrolled open burning, especially from July to September.
"Such burning should be avoided to reduce the effects of the haze and pollution, with people advised to use water sparingly during this period," the statement added.
It said the latest information on the weather could be obtained from the MetMalaysia website, the mobile app myCuaca or the MetMalaysia hotline 1-300-22-1638.
