Home Ministry will give MACC space to probe officers over RM596mil sukuk fraud, says Saifuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry is giving ample space to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate its officers in connection with the RM596mil sukuk (Islamic bonds) misappropriation case, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Home Minister said the investigation was within MACC's jurisdiction.

"The MACC should be given ample space to (perform) its duties in accordance with the law," he told reporters after attending the 216th Police Day celebration at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here on Monday (March 20).

He was asked to comment on reports that ministry officers were expected to be called up by the MACC to assist the investigations.

Last week, four people including a company director and chief financial officer were arrested by the MACC to assist investigations into irregularities in a sukuk deal worth RM596mil related to the project for the registration, recruitment and biometric data storage of foreign workers in a ministry.

According to an MACC source, the four men aged between 40 and 55 were arrested at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.

According to the source, the sukuk was managed by a local bank to finance the project.
