Umno's no contest resolution given exemption by Home Ministry, says Saifuddin


PETALING JAYA: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (pic) has confirmed that Umno has been given an exemption under the Societies Act 1966 (Act 832) regarding the resolution for no contests for the posts of president and deputy president passed during the party's 2022 general assembly.

In a statement, Saifuddin said the exemption was made based on Section 70 of the Act.

"In reference to Umno's constitution and meeting rules, the ministry has decided to grant an exemption from compliance of Section 13(1)(c)(iv) through Section 70 of Act 832 regarding the decision of the additional motion approved at the general assembly that the president and deputy president posts will not be contested in the upcoming Umno election," he said.

Under Section 70 of the Act, the minister may at his discretion in writing exempt any society registered under the Act from all or any of the provisions of said Act.

On Saturday (March 4), Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the party received a letter from the Home Ministry, confirming that the Registrar of Societies (ROS) has accepted the party's no-contest resolution for the top two posts.
