Portion of Stadthuys in disrepair comes under Federal Govt, says Melaka mayor

MELAKA: The part of the Stadthuys building in Bandar Hilir here that has fallen into disrepair comes under the management of the Federal Government, says the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) Mayor.

Datuk Shadan Othman said the section of the former Melaka courthouse belongs to Putrajaya and the maintenance of the building comes under the Federal Land Commission and not the local government.

"MBMB through its Building Control Department has written to the Federal Government on Dec 20 on the need to maintain and restore the site. However, there has no response to date," he said on Sunday (Feb 5).

Shadan was commenting on the condition of the heritage building that has been left to decay.

This comes after Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong said on Saturday (Feb 4) that part of the three-century-old building has been neglected and is in a deplorable state.

He said that he hopes efforts are underway to restore the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.

The Stadthuys was built by the Dutch in 1650 as the office of the Governor and Deputy Governor.
