Batang Kali tragedy brings back pain of losing wife and son for Orang Asli

In his heart forever: Shafie with an old, but cherished picture of his late wife Lohb Juiiah Aiahb Bahci and their son Joshua, who died during the 1996 landslide in Pos Dipang. Until today, the Orang Asli who survived that tragedy are constantly on alert during prolonged rains. The Batang Kali tragedy (pic, below) is also a harsh reminder that they can never let their guard down.

KAMPAR: Shafie Bahoi still has tears in his eyes when he recalls how he lost his pregnant wife and their three-year-old son during the huge mudslide in Pos Dipang near here 27 years ago.

He could only watch helplessly from his father’s house – where he had saved the older man – as the water and debris tore through his house.
