KUALA LUMPUR: In expressing his wishes for the success of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong also thanked all those who have contributed to making it what it is today.

In a social media post Thursday (Jan 5), the MCA president also expressed his gratitude to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah for officiating at the launch of TAR UMT at its main campus in Setapak.

"The long-anticipated day has finally arrived for the launching of the upgrade to TAR UMT.

"This is a significant milestone for the education institution.

"We promise to continue our contribution to the people, the nation as well as the region with persistence and enthusiasm," he said in his post.

Dr Wee, who is the TARC Education Foundation board of trustees chairman, also expressed his appreciation to all parties involved in ensuring that TAR UMT will continue to remain steadfast and strong as one of the country’s education institutions that has benefited many Malaysians, irrespective of religious or racial background.

He then expressed his gratitude to the entire community of TAR UMT, including staff, students and parents, the Higher Education Minister, Finance Ministry, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, education associations and the media for their contributions to making TAR UMT what it is now.

"In 1968, our first prime minister approved the setting up of Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC), which was built under the Second Malaysia Plan (1971-1975).

"In 1969, TARC was officially formed and former MCA president, the late Tun Tan Siew Sin, played a significant role in founding this education institution.

"In 2012, TARC was upgraded to Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC).

"From TARC to TAR UC to TAR UMT, it has been a long and winding journey.

"On Nov 7 last year, TAR UMT received its registration certificate from the Higher Education Department under the Higher Education Ministry," he shared.

Dr Wee then wished the university success in the years to come.

Also present at the launch were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, TAR UMT board of governors chairman Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai and TAR UMT president Prof Dr Lee Sze Wei.
