Melaka polls: Premature to call MCA-BN seat allocation talks 'positive', says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: MCA has yet to decide on its position in the Melaka polls despite holding talks with Barisan Nasional leaders over the allocation of seats.

"As for Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's description of the outcome as 'positive', I believe we are still some distance from achieving that objective.

"It would be premature to describe the outcome as 'positive' at this stage," said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

"Both sides need to continue their discussions and I hope we can make a breakthrough within the next day or two," he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Oct 27).

Dr Wee said the meeting with Barisan leaders took place late Monday (Oct 26), following a directive from Barisan chairman Ahmad Zahid.

He said Barisan secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh met him and another MCA leader at about 11pm, with the discussion concluding around 1am on Tuesday.

"The meeting took place in a calm and cordial atmosphere, without any arguments. MCA clearly conveyed our dissatisfaction with the seat allocation for the Melaka state election," he said.

Dr Wee said MCA had always believed in presenting facts, reasoning things out and engaging in civil discourse, adding that the party sought to resolve differences through consultation and dialogue.

He said the central leadership would collectively deliberate and decide MCA's next course of action and final position regarding the Melaka polls.

Earlier, Ahmad Zahid said a meeting between Barisan and MCA leaders had produced positive results.

MCA leaders, including Dr Wee and deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, walked out of Barisan's candidate announcement at the Melaka International Trade Centre on Saturday (Oct 24), saying the seat allocation had been decided without the party's agreement.

MCA was allocated two of the 21 seats Barisan is contesting, compared with seven seats in the previous state polls in 2021.

Nomination day is set for Oct 31, with polling day on Nov 14 and early voting on Nov 10.
