PETALING JAYA: Bersatu confirms it will contest the Melaka state election, with further details to be announced on Thursday (Oct 29).
Party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the decision was finalised at a meeting of Bersatu’s supreme leadership council on Monday (Oct 26) night.
He said discussions on the seats to be contested were still being fine-tuned and should be concluded within a day or two.
"We have decided to contest. There is no need for me to explain where we will contest, as preparations are already underway, he told a press conference at party headquarters here on Tuesday (Oct 27).
Muhyiddin said the council met every two months to discuss current issues, proposals to strengthen the party, and preparations for upcoming division meetings.
The meeting also decided to hold Bersatu’s annual general assembly at the end of January next year.
On Perikatan Nasional’s decision to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the party, Muhyiddin said they had yet to receive an official letter on the matter.
He questioned the basis for the action, insisting that Bersatu had committed no wrongdoing.
Instead, he said Bersatu had lodged a complaint with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) over alleged breaches of coalition rules by PAS and its national leadership.
He said the ROS had the power to take action under the Societies Act 1996.
Muhyiddin also referred to the ROS action concerning Perikatan's deregistration, as well as recent developments involving the coalition.
"It is strange and unusual for the Perikatan supreme council to decide... to punish us. What have we done wrong?" he asked.
On the Sarawak state election, Muhyiddin said Bersatu had yet to discuss preparations as there was still time.
"We will consider what to do (in Sarawak) after the Melaka election," he said.
Melaka goes to the polls on Nov 14, with nominations set for Saturday (Oct 31) and early voting on Nov 10.
