PETALING JAYA: MCA has yet to reach a final decision on its position in the Melaka election despite holding talks with Barisan Nasional leaders over the coalition’s seat allocation, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).
“As for Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s description of the outcome as ‘positive’, I believe we are still some distance from achieving that objective.
“It would be premature to describe the outcome as positive at this stage,” said the MCA president. Both sides need to continue their discussions, and I hope we can make a breakthrough within the next day or two,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Earlier yesterday, Ahmad Zahid said there was no question of MCA pulling out of the state polls, adding that a meeting between Barisan and MCA leaders had produced positive results.
This had come about after Saturday’s incident in which MCA leaders, including Dr Wee and deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, walked out of Barisan’s candidate announcement at the Melaka International Trade Centre, saying the seat allocation had been decided without the party’s agreement.
MCA was allocated two of the 21 seats Barisan is contesting, compared with seven seats in the 2021 state election.
Yesterday, Dr Wee revealed that a meeting with Barisan leaders took place at a Kuala Lumpur hotel late Monday, following a directive from Ahmad Zahid, who is Barisan chairman.
He said Barisan secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and caretaker Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh met him and another MCA leader at about 11pm.
Their discussion concluded at around 1am yesterday, he added.
“The meeting took place in a calm and cordial atmosphere, without any arguments. MCA clearly conveyed our dissatisfaction with the seat allocation for the Melaka state election,” he said.
