Unsold properties in Johor to be discussed in Federal-level meeting

JOHOR BARU: The issue of unsold properties and abandoned housing projects in the Johor will be address in a meeting between the state and Putrajaya, says Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.

The Deputy Local Government Development Minister said that the matter was brought up during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit here on Friday (Dec 30).

"Both Anwar and Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi (pic) discussed the issue of overhang properties, including abandoned housing projects in the state and especially within the Johor Baru area.

"Onn has told state housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor to conduct a meeting with the ministry," he added.

Akmal Nasrullah, who is also Johor Baru MP, said this after handing out assistance to some 50 needy families at Kampung Melayu Majidee here on Saturday (Dec 31).

He added that the meeting with the state government would be held at the ministry within the next two to three weeks.

"Through the meeting, we are hoping to zero in on the problem and come up with a detailed solution," he said.

Earlier this month, Mohd Jafni said that the Malaysian My Second Home (MMSH) programme could reduce the number of overhang properties in the state.

He added that more than 80% of the unsold properties in Johor were service apartments with an average price of between RM500,000 and RM1mil.

Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar had previously called for the new eligibility criteria for the MMSH programme to be reviewed.

It was announced in August last year that the MMSH would be reactivated with nine new conditions after the programme was suspended in August last year due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

It was reported that Johor had the highest number of overhang residential units with 6,000 units worth RM4.7bil.
