JOHOR BARU: The number of property overhang in Johor continues to decline as the state's real estate sector becomes increasingly popular due to rapid development, says state executive councillor Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor.
The Johor housing and local government committee chairman said the number of unsold properties had dropped from 13,000 to less than 10,000 in recent years.
"Landed properties are being snapped up very quickly in recent years as Johor continues to enjoy rapid development.
"Most of those unsold are high-rise properties, but even those are quickly being sold out.
"The most popular ones are those located near the soon-to-come Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link," he said at a press conference here.
Mohd Jafni said this to the press after handing over Sijil Layak Memiliki Rumah Johor (SLMR) (Johor Certificate of Eligibility to Own a House) to some 2,000 new homeowners here.
On a separate matter, Mohd Jafni also urged the public to apply for the many state government housing incentives available.
"Recently, we have launched three initiatives to provide assistance for those purchasing a first home, move-in costs and rental relief.
"We want Johoreans to apply for these initiatives, which are the result of the rapid economic growth Johor has enjoyed in recent years," he said.
Under the scheme, first-time homebuyers are eligible for a RM5,000 incentive.
Those moving into a new house could receive RM2,000 to help cover initial expenses such as utility deposits.
Meanwhile, the new rental assistance scheme offers RM200 a month for 10 months, totalling RM2,000.
