Police roadblocks to ensure peace, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: The 24-hour roadblocks set up at strategic locations nationwide are meant as a crime prevention measure and to ensure public safety and order, says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.

He said the roadblocks are part of efforts to prevent crime by increasing the level of police presence and will be carried out on a 24-hour basis.

“For the convenience of road users, no roadblocks will be conducted at peak hours be it in the morning or later during the day.

“We advise motorists to cooperate by following instructions at the roadblocks,” he said yesterday.

The IGP said the public did not need to worry about carrying out their daily routines as police were committed to ensuring their safety.

He had earlier warned the public not to create tension or any provocation on social media that could threaten public safety and order.

Acryl Sani said this after the police found that some social media users have uploaded content with extreme racial or religious sentiments and insults towards the royal institutions following GE15 and the ongoing efforts to form the Federal Government.

“The police, in calling for restraint, are warning social media users to refrain from abusing the platform to spread provocative content that may cause public alarm.

“Strict action under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the Sedition Act and the Penal Code will be used against any party trying to create a situation that threatens public safety and order,” he added.

Acryl Sani also said all parties should refrain from doing anything that could disrupt public order and safety.

The IGP added that stern action would be taken against anyone who threatens the nation’s safety.

In polling last Saturday, Pakatan Harapan won 82 parliamentary seats, followed by Perikatan Nasional (73) and Barisan Nasional (30).

The results meant that there was a hung Parliament as no one coalition had achieved the simple majority of 112 seats to form a new Federal Government.
