PETALING JAYA: The next Sarawak election may be called within the next 100 days, says Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian (pic).
Stressing that the next state election “is not far off”, Dr Sim urged party members against being complacent about past achievements or taking victory for granted.
He also said members should realise that the forthcoming election is a battle requiring thorough preparation and full commitment among members.
“You do realise that we are ‘fighting a war’, right? I think the next state election is no less than 100 days away,” he was quoted as saying by Borneo Post.
Sim was speaking at SUPP’s 67th anniversary flag raising ceremony held at the party’s headquarters in Kuching on Thursday (June 4).
Sim, who is also Sarawak deputy premier, warned that the party could face an uphill battle if its members lacked a sense of urgency in preparations.
He also said SUPP’s progress and the state’s achievements are the results of the commitment and hard work of leaders and members.
“We must not be arrogant, overconfident or assume that victory is already ours. As the election gets closer, we must take it more seriously, continue to work hard and work smart,” he said, calling on party members to uphold the fighting spirit of SUPP founders.
The Sarawak state election is slated to be held this year.
In the last state election, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) won 76 out of the 82 seats in the state assembly.
Besides SUPP, other GPS components include Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).
