About 130 Umno division chiefs want Zahid to remain as party president

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 130 Umno division chiefs want Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to remain as party president amid the many calls for his resignation.

The division chiefs gathered at a cafe in the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur at about 3pm to express their support for Ahmad Zahid.

Wangsa Maju division chief Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Shafei Abdullah, the spokesman for the 'solidarity for president" gathering, urged other division chiefs to close ranks.

"We want a united Umno as we only won only 30 seats. We will be facing a disastrous future if we do not unite," he said.

He also expressed regret that MCA, MIC and PBRS had signed a no-confidence letter against Ahmad Zahid as Barisan chairman.

Ahmad Zahid arrived at about 3.45pm and left about 30 minutes later without speaking the media.

It was learnt that he was rushing off to Istana Negara to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
