GE15: Tenom fracas should not have happened, says Hajiji

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has condemned the actions of those who caused trouble in Tenom during the nomination process.

Commenting on the fracas on Saturday (Nov 5) afternoon, the Sabah Chief Minister said any form of violence or unruly behaviour should not happen.

The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman urged all political supporters and politicians to refrain from such behaviour to ensure a smooth GE15.

He also urged authorities to investigate the cause of the incident.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Idris Abdullah said the incident happened at around 12.30pm at the Dewan Sri Antanom Tenom, involving supporters of KDM and its president Datuk Peter Anthony.

He said that the incident happened after the Election Commission (EC) informed Anthony that his nomination could not proceed as he had outstanding court cases.

"The supporters tried to force their way into the nomination centre and security officers including light strike force personnel, Civil Defence and Rela, tried to break it up," he said in a press conference.

Idris said a meeting was later held among Anthony, EC officials and the police to ensure that supporters do not get out of hand.

"Peter Anthony went out of the hall at around 2pm to tell his supporters to accept the EC decision," he said, adding the crowd numbering in the hundreds dispersed at around 2.30pm.

He said the EC had also made its final announcement on the list of candidates for Tenom at 2.20pm with candidates Noorita Sual (Pakatan Harapan), Jamawi Jaafar (Barisan Nasional), Ukim Buandi (Warisan) and two independents Riduan Rubin and Peggy Chaw Zhi Ting.
