Fisherman’s body found off Batu Pahat, search for another victim continues

BATU PAHAT: The body of one of the fishermen who was reported missing has been found after their boat capsized in Parit Hailam waters here last week.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Batu Pahat zone director Maritime Commander Mohd Haniff Mohd Yunus said the body of Te Chia Rong, 38, was found at 11.45am on Monday (Sept 19) at the location where their boat sank.

“The body was found inside a net by a private rescue agency that was hired by the victim’s family.

“It was then brought over to the Batu Pahat Maritime jetty and handed over to the police for further action,” he said in a statement Monday (Sept 19).

MMEA is still conducting a diving mission to locate the other victim, Chia Hock Neng, 60, who is still missing.

On Sept 14, two fishermen were rescued while two others were reported missing after their boat capsized in Parit Hailam.

The boat capsized 9.6 nautical miles (about 17.8km) southwest of Parit Hailam at around 5pm.

The two survivors, 40-year-old Te Chia Haur and Tee Kian Muar, 33, were saved by another boat nearby and brought to shore.

“Strong currents caused the boat to capsize. The skipper and another fisherman managed to save themselves by jumping into the water but the other two, who were believed to be asleep at the time, were nowhere to be seen,” he said.

The survivors were also given medical attention by a medical officer from Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail before going home to their respective families.

Those with information about the missing fishermen can get in touch with the Batu Pahat zone maritime operations centre at 07-434 4020 or the emergency hotline at MERS 999.
