No way to predict end-of-year floods this far off, says MetMalaysia

PUCHONG: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has debunked claims that major floods will occur around the end of the year.

Its director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said there was no way to predict the weather pattern months from now.

"Media reports saying there will be big floods (at the) end of November are not accurate because there is no way for us to predict whether it is going to happen in the end or middle of November, or in which month.

"The only thing we know is that there will be four to six monsoon surges, which will happen between November and March," he said at a briefing with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) and several other bodies.

A monsoon surge brings cold pressure and leads to continuous heavy rain. Malaysia experienced six such surges last year.
