Fear of a hung parliament should not stop GE15, says Ahmad Zahid

PETALING JAYA: The possibility of a hung parliament should not prevent the 15th General Election (GE15) from being held, says Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

In a Facebook post on Monday (Aug 22) to debunk fears of a hung parliament, the Umno president said the situation which he described as a "myth" would not be as bad as it had been made out to be by certain groups.

"Myths are old stories that are considered true, but are not true or made up. Political myths are things that are not true and can be proven (to be untrue)," said Ahmad Zahid.

He added that political science expert Dr Wong Chin Huat recently gave an insight on the issue of a hung parliament.

"Interestingly, he delivered it in the Keluarga Malaysia Symposium which was officiated by the Prime Minister. He (Dr Wong) explained that there is nothing to fear or worry about if there is a hung parliament," said Ahmad Zahid.

"This situation is not as bad as described by certain parties, nor does it cause the destruction of a country or severely affect the economy," he added.

Ahmad Zahid said on the other hand, there is a need to have a more comparative understanding of politics in the political system.

"The government of New Zealand between 1996 and 2020 was formed from that but (the country is) still stable and developing.

"(Wong's explanation) is to open up (a) better understanding of the current political myth.

"Therefore, do not use the excuse of fearing a hung parliament to prevent the general election from being held," he said.
