Another man nabbed for desecrating Jalur Gemilang in KL

KUALA LUMPUR: Another case of desecrating the Jalur Gemilang was reported in Brickfields here on Sunday (Aug 21), with the suspect detained for further action.

A post on Kuala Lumpur City Hall's (DBKL) official Facebook page said the man was seen ripping the Jalur Gemilang from the pedestrian bridge at Jalan Syed Putra.

However, in the post on Monday (Aug 22), DBKL said its enforcement officers had detained the vandal and handed him over to the police for further action.

"Why was the Jalur Gemilang targeted? The suspect has been handed over to the police," the post read.

A DBKL spokesperson, when contacted, urged the public to lodge a report if they came across anyone found to be vandalising the national flags.

He said they could do so via the Adu@KL and "Tanya Kak Long" chatbot systems on the City Hall's website, as well as calling the hotline 1800-88-3255 during office hours.

Explaining on their enforcement scope, he said that DBKL was working with the police to handle the matter.

"Our officers will detain any vandals caught in the act and call the police to pick up the person for further action.

"DBKL will also replace any flags that have been damaged or are missing," he said.

Meanwhile, Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Amihizam Abdul Shukor said, acting on a report lodged by a DBKL officer, a police team spotted the man along Jalan Tun Sambanthan 4.

He said at the scene were two DBKL officers with the man, who was suspected to be mentally disabled.

“The man was brought to the Brickfields police headquarters for documentation purposes.

“He was then sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for a health check and has been referred to the psychiatric ward,” he said in a statement.

According to Sinar Harian, this is the third case of vandalism involving the Jalur Gemilang reported to DBKL.

The first was reported in Jalan Sultan Ismail on Aug 16, while the second incident, involving the same suspect, was reported on Aug 17 at the MITEC building along Jalan Ampang.
