Investigation ordered into runaway lorry incident on Causeway

PETALING JAYA: An immediate investigation has been ordered into a viral incident involving a runaway lorry ploughing through several vehicles along the congested Johor Baru-Woodlands Causeway.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, who made the order, said that he viewed such cases seriously and would not compromise with any party.

"Those who are at fault will be severely punished as it involves the safety and lives of road users," he said in a Facebook post on Thursday (July 7).

The post also included the 34-second viral video.

The incident was said to have happened early Thursday when a lorry was seen ploughing through several vehicles without slowing down.

The individual who was recording the incident could be heard speaking in Hokkien expressing shock, saying that the driver did not seem to have slowed the vehicle down before hitting several others.

Dr Wee said that the driver's licence and company's permit could be suspended if found responsible for the accident under the Road Transport Act 1987.

He said the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has been ordered to investigate the matter including asking the police to run a urine test on the driver.

He added that the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) has also been directed to conduct a technical investigation as to what resulted in the accident.

Dr Wee urged members of the public who witnessed the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.
