Could Idris Haron return as Melaka CM?

JASIN: The six-cornered battle at the Asahan state seat will be a closely watched one as it will determine former Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron’s political career with PKR and Pakatan Harapan.

There is already talk that if Idris wins Asahan, he could be Pakatan’s chief minister candidate for Melaka, given his previous experience helming the state during the Barisan Nasional administration from 2013 to 2018.

However, the former Sungai Udang assemblyman downplayed the speculation when filing for his candidacy at the nomination centre at Selandar Community College here yesterday.

“Idris is not important, what’s more important is to win the state election. It can be Adly Zahari or anyone,” he said, referring to the Parti Amanah Negara vice-president who succeeded him as chief minister before the latter was deposed last year following the Sheraton Move. As Idris was addressing the media in an impromptu press conference, the police instructed him and the reporters to disperse as they were violating Covid-19 rules.

Nonetheless, Idris proceeded with the press conference, leading to several reporters being evicted from the nomination centre.
