MIC to defend Gadek in Melaka polls, weighs contesting more seats, says Saravanan

TAPAH: MIC will defend its solitary seat in the upcoming Melaka state election for now, with the party also weighing a possible increase in the number of constituencies it will contest, its deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said.

He said the MIC leadership was assessing several factors before deciding whether to seek additional seats, including the suitability of the constituencies, the strength of potential candidates and the prospects of winning.

"Any decision on additional seats to be contested by MIC in the Melaka state election has yet to be finalised as the matter is still under consideration by the party leadership,” he told reporters after attending the 2026 Tapah Parliamentary Students Laptop Handover Programme at Dewan Mahatma Gandhi here on Sunday (Aug 16).

The Tapah MP said party president Tan Sri S A Vigneswaran was currently evaluating potential candidates, with a decision expected soon.

He said the party had also begun its election preparations, including identifying voters, particularly its core supporters, and assessing current issues that could have a bearing on the campaign.

"For now, we have started groundwork to identify voters, particularly our core supporters, as well as issues that are currently being addressed or need to be addressed in the near future,” he said.

In the 2021 Melaka state election, MIC, which contested under the Barisan Nasional (BN) banner, won the Gadek seat through its candidate VP Shanmugam in a six-cornered contest with a 559-vote majority. - Bernama
