Melaka polls: Umno still waiting candidate proposals, says state chairman

MELAKA: Melaka Umno is still awaiting proposed candidates from its divisions for the coming state election, with no firm date set for an announcement.

State Umno chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said he would provide an update once the full list had been received.

"Not yet. Please be patient, once I have the names, I will let you know," he said on Tuesday (Oct 6).

Ab Rauf, who is also the Melaka Chief Minister, could not give a date for announcing the list.

It was previously reported that Melaka Umno would scrutinise nominations submitted by its divisions, alongside those from MCA and MIC, in preparation for the state polls.

Ab Rauf, who also chairs Melaka Barisan Nasional, had earlier said state Umno leaders were asked to submit at least three names for each state seat for discussion and assessment before a decision was made.

The proposed candidates would typically undergo several rounds of screening before their names were submitted to the party's top leadership for consideration and a final decision.

Barisan won 21 of the 28 state seats in the 2021 Melaka election, with Umno securing 18, MCA two and MIC one.
