MELAKA: Incumbent assemblymen contesting in the Melaka state election need not worry if the campaign goes digital, says state MCA liaison committee secretary Koh Chin Han (pic).
He said if the incumbents had served their constituents effectively since 2018, they should have confidence that they do not need to campaign house to house or hold public ceramah.
“Why worry? The constituents would support those who have worked hard for the past three years.“Only those who feel the need to convince voters for not serving them well would fear going digital in the election,” he said in an interview.
Koh, who is also Jasin MCA chief, said there had been golden opportunities for the assemblymen to serve their electorates during the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the floods.
“An election candidate wouldn’t be popular overnight as the electorates would evaluate their performances in the past three years before casting their ballots.
“Having a last-minute ceramah to win the hearts of voters during a pandemic is not wise,” he added.
Koh said MCA would use digital platforms to reveal report cards on services rendered to the people for the past three years and even before that.
“We have done our best all these years and will lay our achievements for the electorate to gauge,” he said.
Koh said Melaka MCA also hoped to go around explaining to the grassroots the achievements it had made even without having a single state seat.
“But we have to consider the ground sentiment as the majority of the electorates fear the risk of infection if large-scale gatherings are held.
“For us, the health and safety of locals is the priority and we will abide by all standard operating procedures for the Melaka election,” he said.
The polls were triggered following the dissolution of the Melaka state assembly after Sungai Udang assemblyman Datuk Seri Idris Haron and three other assemblymen withdrew their support for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.
