PETALING JAYA: There are no individuals and leaders who are bigger or more important than Umno, says its deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

"There is no power greater than the power of the people.

"There is no struggle that is more meaningful than the struggle for the common people, " he said in a statement on Thursday (July 8).

After Umno's decision to withdraw support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, he said the party has taken a stand and has a way to move forward.

"May this path and stand be the best for the people, the nation, and our party Umno, " he said.

He added that Umno was formed to fight for the struggles of the Malays and Malaysians, glorify Islam, preserve the honour of the royal institution, and develop the nation.

"This will continue to be Umno's stand. As a political party, the clarity of a stand is very important. Without one, Umno becomes only a registered party, not a struggle, " he said.

He said when the country was in a deteriorating condition, Umno's stand should be in keeping with the people's aspirations.

"When the health system worsens, the economy collapses and deteriorates, poverty increases, more and more commit suicide.

"Hunger has become real, white, black flags and those of all colours have been flown, democracy has been distorted, even the institution of the King is opposed.

"Umno cannot be part of this, " he said.

He said that the stand of Umno's leadership would not deviate from the priorities of the people, the country and the party, nor from the decision of the supreme council.

Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said early on Thursday morning that the party had decided to officially withdraw support for the Prime Minister with immediate effect.

Ahmad Zahid said the withdrawal of support came because Muhyiddin had not abided by seven requirements outlined by the Umno secretary when the government was sworn in on March 11 last year.

Umno has 38 MPs in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat.
