Woman arrested over baby's body found in Kuala Berang drain

KUALA BERANG: Police have arrested a local woman to assist in investigations into the discovery of a baby's body in a drain at the Padang Setengge residential area near here on Friday afternoon (Oct 16).

Hulu Terengganu police chief Supt Sharudin Abdul Wahab said the 23-year-old suspect was arrested at her residence at 3.30pm for investigation under Section 318 of the Penal Code.

He said the arrest enabled police to establish the circumstances surrounding the birth and the suspect’s involvement in the incident, bringing the investigation to a close within 24 hours.

"The post-mortem conducted by a pathologist from the Forensic Department of Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) this morning found that the baby was full-term and had died more than 24 hours before the examination at 9am.

"However, it could not be determined whether the baby was born alive or dead, nor could the cause of death be ascertained. The sex of the baby has also not been determined,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 17).

Bernama reported yesterday that a woman discovered the body of a baby with several missing limbs in a drain while washing clothes behind her house in the Padang Setengge residential area.- Bernama
