Penang bridges the gap, ready to move to next phase

PUTRAJAYA: Penang is set to move to Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) tomorrow after fulfilling three threshold value indicators, including having lowered the number of daily Covid-19 cases.Announcing this, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the average number of daily cases recorded in the state over seven days was 9.5 per 100,000 people, which was lower than the threshold of 12.2 cases per 100,000 people.

Additionally, the percentage of adults in Penang who had received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine was 10.1%.

Ismail Sabri said the National Security Council (NSC) special meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin also noted that the use of beds at intensive care units in Penang was at the “moderate” level.“The NSC special meeting reviewed a presentation on transitions for states under the NRP and after looking at the threshold figures, it agreed for Penang to move to the next phase, which is Phase Two,” he said in a statement yesterday.Ismail Sabri said states which had moved to Phase Two were advised to continue with efforts to protect the community from Covid-19 and to boost their performance in order to move to the next phase.

On Monday, five states – Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Terengganu and Perlis – moved to Phase Two.

Ismail Sabri also said residents in enhanced movement control order (MCO) areas would be allowed to travel to get vaccinated.

He said travel to hometowns to take family members and vaccine dependents for their vaccination appointments would also be allowed.“All they need to do is to show the appointment on MySejahtera and obtain police permission.

“For those travelling to get inoculated, a maximum of three people are allowed in the vehicle, including the driver,” he added.

On July 3, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said police were waiting for the green light from the Health Ministry to let residents from enhanced MCO areas in the city travel to vaccination centres.

Ismail Sabri also said that convenience stores, supermarkets and mini-markets would be allowed to sell all goods during the NRP period.

He said eateries under Phases One and Two could operate from 6am to 10pm, but operations for outlets in enhanced MCO areas, including affected subdistricts in Selangor and localities in Kuala Lumpur, could only operate between 8am and 8pm.
