KUALA LUMPUR: Umno and Barisan Nasional need to chart a new "political correctness" that is strategic and explores new possibilities for the country's future, says Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Mohamad said that the people need to be convinced that no government is stable without the support of the largest Malay party in the country and that Umno is the only Malay-based party that has the influence and practices moderation.

“Many may ask how Barisan can rule with only four component parties. My answer is simple. Umno and Barisan is a political entity. It is alive, dynamic and progressive, it is open and evolving," said Mohamad.

"Umno realises that change is imminent and therefore, we along with Barisan need to explore possibilities, ” he added when opening the Youth, Wanita and Puteri meetings.

Barisan had 14 component parties prior to the 14th General Election in 2018, but is now left with Umno, MCA, MIC and PBRS.

Explaining what he means by political correctness, Mohamad said that Umno should be guided by good values, principles and strict conditions, adding that it needs to be beneficial to the party, the Malays and Islam.

“There is no compromise on this. The interests of the Malays must not be abandoned. What is the use of being in power when the Malays are destroyed," said Mohamad.

“Secondly, whatever path Umno takes must ensure that it will lead the country’s administration. It must lead in all aspects of power sharing and political cooperation," he added.

Mohamad also said that there will be no administration without Umno as its main player and leader.

He added that political correctness must result in political stability that is sustainable and not merely a desperate cooperation, one that is opportunistic and one where there are “wolves in a sheep’s skin”.
