Ungku Aziz to be honoured by UM

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Malaya (UM) will be having a tribute to honour the late Royal Prof Ungku Abdul Aziz Ungku Abdul Hamid’s contributions to the country on Monday.

The tribute, organised by the university’s Faculty of Economics and Administration, as well as the Ungku Aziz Centre for Development will be held virtually at 3pm on Zoom as well as UM’s Facebook page.

The virtual tribute will be attended by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who will deliver a speech.

Other guests include the late Ungku Aziz’s daughter and former Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Aziz, PKR founding leader Dr Syed Husin Ali, economist Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram and former UM chief librarian Khoo Siew Mun.

The speakers will pay a special tribute to Ungku Aziz for his contributions and roles in various fields such as developing the discipline of economics as an academic, promoting poverty eradication and rural development, creating institutions in UM and setting up the National Cooperatives Movement and Lembaga Tabung Haji.

Ungku Aziz died on Dec 15 last year at the age of 98.

Born in Hampstead, London, in 1922, Ungku Aziz was a renowned economist, administrator, academician, sportsman and writer.

He was the first Malaysian and longest serving vice-chancellor of UM and the first Malay economist.

He was also the sole person to be accorded the status of Royal Professor in the country.
