Pitas rep pushing for fast-tracking of 13 new telco towers in district

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Assistant Minister Datuk Ruddy Awah will attempt to expedite the installation of 13 new telecommunication towers in Pitas.

The district recently became famous for its poor Internet connectivity due to the plight of Veveonah Mosibin. The Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) undergraduate had shared how she had to climb a tree near her village to get online.

The Pitas district was thrust into the limelight again last week when a video of villagers used a bamboo pole to elevate a mobile phone so it could be used as an Internet WiFi hotspot for the village.

Ruddy said he would work with the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ensure the 13 telco towers could be fast-tracked for the district.

“I will assist in this matter as the people here deserve to receive better Internet coverage, ” he said in a statement after visiting Kampung Mengkapon on Sunday (Oct 11), where the viral video was filmed.

Under Phase 1 of the National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP), 50 new telco towers will be erected in Sabah, including 13 in Pitas.

MCMC has identified Kampung Mengkapon as one of the locations for the new towers.
