KUALA LUMPUR: Umno leaders and members should remain calm following the conviction of Datuk Seri Najib Razak, says party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic).
“We believe there are still avenues for Datuk Seri Najib to get justice through the nation’s legal process. I am sure he (Najib) will remain strong and persevere,” he said in a Facebook post.
Outside the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex, Ahmad Zahid also said he accepted the court’s decision but was saddened by the verdict.
He, however, added that Najib had told him that it was “not the end of the world”.
“Surely Umno will do something about it. What we are going to do will decide the direction of the current government,” said the Bagan Datuk MP without elaborating.
Meanwhile, the mood outside the Duta Court Complex, which was jubilant earlier, turned solemn as supporters learned of Najib’s conviction.
The supporters, mostly clad in blue and red, were emotional and chanted “hidup bossku!” and “bubar Parlimen!” (dissolve the Parliament!) as the police secured the main gate to prevent them from entering the premises.
Veteran actor Sulaiman Yassin, better known as “Mat Over”, said he was disappointed.
“This is nothing but a political decision. I feel he (Najib) was sabotaged in an unfair political game.
“I hope the parliament can be dissolved soon so that Datuk Seri Najib can receive the justice he deserves.”
Wangsa Maju Division Wanita chief Noriah Ibrahim said she had feared the worst but still wanted to come to show her support for Najib.
“I am very angry over the decision,” she said.
Separately, police said those outside the court could face fines if they were found to have violated the recovery movement control order (MCO).
Sentul OCPD Asst Comm S. Shanmugamoorthy said hundreds had initially gathered but these numbers dwindled due to various factors, including the weather.
He noted Najib’s supporters had started marching in the morning from the Federal Territory Mosque.
“We had warned them to follow the SOP, including maintaining social distancing and wearing face masks.
“At first they did not comply but after a few reminders, they complied. The situation was under control and no untoward incident occurred,” he said when met at the court complex yesterday.
He said 200 police personnel were on duty today to maintain order around the court complex.
Yesterday evening, a man was detained after he climbed the Duta Court Complex’s gates to enter the premises.
ACP Shanmugamoorthy said the man, who is in his 30s, was detained at about 6.15pm and investigations were under way.
