IPOH: YouTube sensation S. Pavithra is now an Ipoh City icon, a title given exclusively to Ipoh-born individuals for their success.
The title, which was also given to actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, was awarded by Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.
He said Pavithra, 28, was born in Buntong and her success should be an example to others.
“She is among 10 others who are already on our list for the title.
“We were supposed to hold the ceremony during this year’s Ipoh City Day, but it coincided with the movement control order (MCO).
“Therefore, it will be awarded to them officially next year on May 7, ” he said yesterday.
Rumaizi added that the council was currently reviewing other Ipoh-born individuals who also deserved the title.
“We plan to give the award to at least 100 people who have made Ipoh proud of their talents and success.
“The full list will be revealed later. It is safe to say that this list will include those from various backgrounds, be it in entrepreneurship, the arts, government service or others, ” he said.
Pavithra and her husband M. Sugu became YouTube sensations after they began uploading videos of her cooking on the channel “Sugu Pavithra” during the MCO.
On July 9, the couple met Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who presented them with a camera tripod, a microwave oven, a rice cooker and cooking utensils.
Pavithra thanked the mayor for awarding her the title.
“I would like to express my gratitude to those who have been supporting us. I feel honoured to receive such a title, ” she said.
