Ipoh icon award ceremony for Pavithra to go ahead as scheduled, says mayor

IPOH: The Ipoh City Icon award given to S. Pavithra remains, says Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.

Without elaborating, the Ipoh mayor said they were not disappointed to hear of Pavithra and her husband M. Sugu’s statement on their decision to decline the award.

“There are no hard feelings, and we are not disappointed,” he told reporters at the state secretariat building here on Tuesday (July 28).

“But there has been no official statements from her party (to us),” he said, adding that the award ceremony, scheduled for next year, would still be held.

Buntong-born Pavithra, who was named Ipoh City Icon on July 20, has been reported as saying that she and her husband will reject the award.

Pavithra and Sugu rose to fame after uploading a series of cooking videos on the “Sugu Pavithra” YouTube channel during the movement control period imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Last Friday, Sugu claimed trial at the Sessions Court here after being charged with causing hurt to Pavithra and being in possession of a sickle at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital on July 21.
