IPOH: YouTube sensation S. Pavithra, 28, has been named an Ipoh City Icon.

The title was awarded by Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin, who congratulated Pavithra on her success.

"Pavithra was born in Buntong and her success should be an example to others," he told reporters at the city council building here Monday (July 20).

Rumaizi said the same title was also given to actress Michelle Yeoh.

"Pavithra is among 10 others who are already in our list for the title.

"We were supposed to hold the ceremony during this year's Ipoh City Day (Hari Bandaraya Ipoh), but it coincided with the movement control order (MCO).

"Therefore, it will be awarded to them officially next year, scheduled on May 7," he said.

Pavithra and her husband M. Sugu became YouTube sensations after they uploaded a series of her cooking, under the “Sugu Pavithra” channel during the MCO.

On July 9, the couple met Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who had gifted them a camera tripod, a microwave oven, a rice cooker and cooking utensils.

Pavithra thanked the mayor for awarding her the title.

"I would like to express my gratitude towards those who have been supporting us.

"I feel honoured to receive such a title," she said.

Rumaizi said the council is currently reviewing other Ipoh-born individuals who may deserve the same title.

"We plan to give the award to at least 100 people who are from Ipoh.

"These people have made Ipoh proud with their talents and success.

"The full list will be revealed later. It is safe to say that this list will include those from various backgrounds, whether it’s in entrepreneurship, arts, government servants and more," he said.
