JOHOR BARU: The rift in Johor between Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Umno has been resolved following a meeting with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, according to officials.
The meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya yesterday was attended by Mentri Besar and Johor Umno chief Datuk Hasni Mohammad, Johor Umno secretary Datuk Samsolbari Jamali, Johor Bersatu chief Mazlan Bujang and the party’s state secretary Mohd Solihan Badri.
Also present were former Johor mentris besar Datuk Osman Sapian and Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal, both of Bersatu.
It is learnt that the meeting was called by Muhyiddin who wanted to know the problems nagging both parties in the state.
When contacted, Mazlan confirmed the meeting with Muhyiddin and described it as “fruitful”.
He said Johor Bersatu and Umno managed to “find common ground in resolving the main stumbling block”.
“The problem is quite minor as it involved the appointments of village chiefs, local councillors, as well as members of the board of visitors of hospitals,” he said.
Mazlan, who is a state executive councillor, added that he considered the issue resolved and gave a commitment that both parties would work together.
The friction between Bersatu and Umno in Johor had threatened to destabilise the Perikatan Nasional state government.
This led to speculation about Perikatan’s position as the state government, with the approaching state assembly sitting scheduled for May 14.
The Johor assembly has 56 seats, with Perikatan holding 29 and Pakatan Harapan 27.
