Johor Sultan: Govt, developers should work together to build more affordable houses

JOHOR BARU: Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar has called on government officials and developers to find a realistic solution to address the lack of affordable housing in the state and country.

The Johor Ruler advised the Government to work hand-in-hand with developers to find a win-win solution and policies that encourage the building of more affordable houses for the people, irrespective of race and religion.

"The current house prices are way too high for most people. They simply cannot afford to buy them ... they can only afford to look at them," he said in his speech at the inaugural StarProperty.my Awards 2017 at Thistle Hotel here on Friday.

He added that the bumiputra quota was supposed to help but it is not working.

"Developers cannot find buyers, even if certain houses are reserved for bumiputras," said Sultan Ibrahim, adding that the time has come for a revision of this policy.

He suggested that instead of a quota system, zoning designated areas for affordable housing should be considered.
