KEMAMAN: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will re-evaluate the effectiveness of its operation against motorists using vehicles with strobe lights, non-regulation number plates and high intensity discharge (HID) lights.
Its director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said an in-depth review would be carried out to decide whether the operation should be continued or stopped after its one-month period ends on Nov 30.
“Within the first week of the operation, 5,515 summonses were issued to motorists,” he told reporters here yesterday.
He stressed that the operation was conducted not merely to penalise motorists, but also to educate them on the need to adhere to existing laws.
The nationwide crackdown on fancy number plates, strobe lights and HID lights started early this month.
About 1,500 personnel were involved in the operation which was jointly conducted with the traffic police and Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).
Checks were conducted in hotspot areas, in all cities and major towns nationwide, and summonses were issued on the spot to motorists.
JPJ, however, postponed the enforcement date for the new level of tint allowable to May 1.
