MIC treasurer-general Ramanan steps down over fraud case

PETALING JAYA: MIC treasurer-general Datuk R. Ramanan resigned from his post Monday, following a High Court decision against him in a civil case.

"With the greatest respect to the High Court, I'm innocent. I have requested for a stay of execution pending my appeal," he said in a press conference here.

Ramanan added that he did not want the issue to be exploited by any quarters.

"I would not want my president (Datuk G. Palanivel) to be burdened by this," he added.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court recently ordered Ramanan to return RM5.5mil to psychiatrist Tan Sri Dr M. Mahadevan, the plaintiff in the case.

The ruling was made after Ramanan was found to have fraudulently received the sum from the Defence Ministry when assisting Mahadevan to recover a payment in 2010.
