Six-day remand order issued for teen suspect in Yong Peng school murder


BATU PAHAT: A 16-year-old boy has been remanded for six days in connection with the suspected murder of Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the suspect was arrested at about 7pm on Saturday (Oct 3) in the Yong Peng area by a team from the Johor Criminal Investigation Department and Batu Pahat district police.

“The suspect is a local male teenager with no previous criminal record.

“The suspect was brought before the Batu Pahat Magistrate’s Court on Sunday to obtain a remand order, and the magistrate allowed him to be detained for six days until Friday (Oct 9) to assist investigations,” he said here on Sunday (Oct 4).

Comm Ab Rahaman said police received information from a member of the public at about 5.50pm on Saturday (Oct 3) about a local teenage girl found unconscious and covered in blood inside a hall at a school in Yong Peng.

“The victim had suffered several injuries to several parts of her head and body and was subsequently confirmed dead at the scene,” he added.

He said a post-mortem examination would be conducted on Sunday at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital here to find out the cause of her death.

Comm Ab Rahaman added that police also seized a mobile phone, a set of clothing and a pair of slippers from the suspect, and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

He said the motive and cause of the incident were still under investigation while urging the public not to speculate or make comments that could interfere with the investigation.

“Johor police also welcome the cooperation of the public to continue channelling information related to crime to the nearest police station,” he said.
