Liew Qi Jian, a Bachelor of Data Science (Honours) student, received the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation Premier Digital Technology Institution “Outstanding Student Award 2025” on March 31.

The national-level recognition celebrates students for excellence in digital skills, innovation and high employability, with accolades awarded annually to boost the local tech talent ecosystem.

A winner of some 30 local and international hackathons, Liew credited his academic foundation, technical knowledge and proactiveness for the achievement.

“I feel a deep sense of gratitude towards my supervisors, mentors and teammates, as their guidance and support enabled me to achieve this milestone,” said Liew, who co-founded the TAR UMT Blockchain Club.

Under his leadership, the student community established strategic partnerships with global industry leaders and won 17 international competitions.

Meanwhile, Lee Yong Heng and Tey Yi You emerged top in Malaysia for Mathematics and top in the world for Biology, respectively, in the A-Level examination results announced in January.

The duo’s consistent academic achievements have led to them being awarded the prestigious Asean Undergraduate Scholarship to pursue their degrees at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

Lee will enrol in a computing degree focusing on artificial intelligence and society, while Tey will pursue a degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering.

“I am thankful to my mother for encouraging me to pursue my dreams of studying overseas and to TAR UMT for paving the way,” said Lee in an April 21 press release.
