Chasing dreams beyond the kampung

GROWING up in a rural village in Setiu, Terengganu, Hakimi Samsuddin (pic) often felt he was on the margins, far from bright lights and prospects.

Life in his kampung was simple; many around him took on labour-intensive jobs or ran small businesses to eke out a living.

His own family was no exception. His father worked multiple jobs, including running a small grocery shop, while his mother, a homemaker, helped manage the business and care for five children.

Though both parents only had basic education, they were hardworking and held firmly to the belief that education could change their children’s future.

That conviction became Hakimi’s guiding principle in forging his own path.

But when the time came to pursue his degree around 2012, the financial demands of higher education proved daunting.

Tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses would require sacrifices from his family, so Hakimi started searching for scholarship opportunities. That was how he discovered the Star Education Fund (SEF).

Receiving a scholarship through the fund enabled him to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Language Studies (Honours) in English for Professional Communication at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam, Selangor.

“The scholarship became more than just financial assistance. It was a chance to continue my studies while easing the burden on my family.

“I felt incredibly excited and relieved. It was also a vote of confidence from people who believed in my potential,” he said.

The immediate impact was clear. With financial worries lifted, Hakimi was able to fully focus on his studies and immerse himself in campus life. More importantly, the recognition instilled in him a strong sense of responsibility to make the most of the opportunity.

“Coming from a humble background, it meant a lot to be chosen. It reminded me that hard work and perseverance could open doors that once seemed out of reach,” he said.

University life further shaped his direction. Through coursework and group projects, Hakimi discovered a passion for communication and storytelling – particularly how organisations convey their values and messages effectively. It was a realisation that would guide his future.

After graduating, he began his career with Star Media Group before gaining experience across various organisations. Today, Hakimi is manager of corporate communication at EPIC Berhad, where he oversees corporate messaging, media engagement and stakeholder communications across diverse sectors.

Reflecting on his journey, the 33-year-old described the scholarship as pivotal.

“It gave me the foundation to pursue my studies, build my network and discover my calling. Sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity to transform an entire life,” he said.

He credited discipline, perseverance and gratitude for helping him make the most of that opportunity.

These qualities, he added, are what scholarship panels value alongside academic results.

For aspiring applicants, he has this advice to offer: “Be authentic, be prepared and clearly articulate your purpose.”

This feature is part of a series highlighting beneficiaries of the Star Education Fund (SEF), in celebration of Star Media Group’s 55th anniversary. Since its inception in 1994, the SEF has benefited 4,601 scholarship recipients, with a total value of RM176mil. Applications for the 2026 edition are now open at https://www.thestar.com.my/edufund.
