UTAR academics awarded ‘Best Presenter’ in China

Siong Kang and Ming Han

TWO Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) academics from the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science were acknowledged with the Best Presenter Award at the recent 12th International Conference on Energy and Environment Research (ICEER 2025) in Chengdu, China.

Dr Lim Ming Han and Assoc Prof Dr Lim Siong Kang from the Department of Civil Engineering captivated international audiences with their research presentations at the “Natural Ecological Construction and Environmentally Sustainable Development” and “Renewable Energy” sessions, respectively.

Ming Han was recognised for his paper “Stochastic-based Noise Prediction for Dynamic Construction Activity using the Random Forest and Bayesian Optimization”, which leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to predict and mitigate construction noise.

It also demonstrates how data-driven modelling can enhance urban liveability, reduce community disturbances, and contribute to the development of greener, quieter cities aligned with net-zero ambitions.

According to Ming Han, his research on stochastic-based noise prediction in construction uses AI methods like random forest and bayesian optimisation to support sustainable urban development.

“I demonstrated how intelligent models can help build quieter, greener cities, minimise community disturbances, and contribute to healthier living environments in line with the net-zero carbon vision,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Siong Kang impressed the panel with his paper titled “Effect of Fibre Length in Enhancing the Mechanical Properties of Treated Kenaf Fibre Lightweight Foamed Composite”.

His research advances the use of natural fibres in sustainable construction, illustrating how renewable kenaf-based materials can be optimised as lightweight, durable and eco-friendly alternatives to conventional building products.

Presenting his findings to a global audience, Siong Kang highlighted the potential of natural composites in transforming the construction industry towards more sustainable practices.

He said the experience at ICEER 2025 allowed him to exchange knowledge, showcase the potential of sustainable natural fibres, and contribute to advancing eco-friendly construction materials for a greener future.

Held from Sept 12 to 14, the conference, which brought together leading voices in energy, environment and sustainability research, was themed “Towards Sustainable Geographies with Net Zero Carbon Economy”.
