Jewellery store in PD charged with owning inaccurate weighing equipment

SEREMBAN: A company running a jewellery store claimed trial in the Sessions Court here to a charge of possessing an electronic weighing equipment which provided inaccurate readings.

The company, represented by its 67-year-old director Yee Siew Hoon, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to her before judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam.

The company was charged with committing the offence at the jewellery store in Port Dickson around 9.51pm on July 4 last year.

It was charged with being in possession of an electronic weighing equipment for commercial use which did not conform to the authorised units or was unjust.

The company was charged under Section 16 of the Weights and Measures Act 1972, which deals with the offence of using or possessing unjust weights, measures, or instruments for trade.

The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry utilises this section to address traders using expired or non-compliant scales, reinforcing the importance of accurate measurements in trade.

Offenders can be jailed for up to RM40,000 or jailed not more than three years or both upon conviction.

Ministry prosecuting officer Khairul Azman Rosli Ministry then told the court his team was offering the accused bail of RM10,00 with one surety pending next mention.

Defence lawyer Kartikeyan Supramaniam pleaded for a lower amount, adding that the accused was not a flight risk as the company has been running the business for the past 45 years.

Judge Mohamad Kamil then fixed bail at RM2,000 with one surety and fixed April 2 for the next mention.
