Mosques, surau in Perak may perform prayers for Palestine without directive, says Saarani

IPOH: Prayers for Palestine can be conducted at mosques and surau without directives from the authorities, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

"There's no need to wait for instructions from the Islamic Development Malaysia Department (Jakim). The imams can also hold the Friday or tarawih prayers (for Palestine)," said the Perak Mentri Besar after presenting Hari Raya goodies to uniformed units at the state secretariat building here on Wednesday (Mar 19).

Mosques and surau, under the supervision of Jakim and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi), have been instructed to perform solat hajat (prayer of need) for Palestine throughout the remaining days of Ramadan.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said this was to show Malaysia’s solidarity with the Palestinian people in light of Israel’s brutal attacks in Gaza, which violate the ceasefire agreement.

On Saturday (March 15), Israel launched airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, breaking the ceasefire agreement that came into effect on Jan 19.

It was reported that eight Palestinian humanitarian workers with the Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organisations (Mapim) were among those killed in the airstrikes.

The volunteers were killed while putting up tents to shelter displaced families in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza.
