Uncleared drains trigger Sepang flash floods

ABOUT 10 houses in Taman Indah KLIA in Sepang, Selangor, were affected by flash floods on Thursday evening (Oct 29), prompting a local councillor to call for urgent drainage-clearing works.

Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) councillor Ilyas As-Said Zaharuddin said water overflowed from drains and seeped into homes at about 7pm.

Although the water level rose only a few inches, he said the incident should not be taken lightly as the monsoon season had begun.

“The drains are supposed to be cleared twice a year.

“The first clearing exercise was carried out in May and the second should have been completed before the monsoon season started.

“The monsoon season began on Oct 27, but the drains have yet to be cleared,” he said during the MPSepang full board meeting.

He urged MPSepang to expedite drain-clearing works, especially in flood hotspots, to minimise the risk of further flooding.

MPSepang president Dr Ani Ahmad said the council would look into expediting the works.
