DEMOLITION of the two remaining Highland Towers blocks in Ampang Jaya, Selangor, remains stalled as the developer has yet to submit a formal application to the local authority.
Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari said the council’s legal department issued reminder letters to the developer in September and October, urging it to expedite the process.
“So far, they are still making adjustments and conducting studies.
"We have yet to receive a formal application or official design plans from them.
“Court approval has been obtained and we are now awaiting further action from the developer involved to carry out the work,” he said after chairing the council’s full board meeting at Menara MPAJ in Ampang today (Oct 30).
He added that MPAJ would continue to follow up on the matter to ensure the process moved forward.
It was previously reported that MPAJ had secured a court ruling allowing it to proceed with action on the remaining Highland Towers buildings.
The decision cleared previous legal hurdles and paved the way for the long-abandoned blocks to be demolished.
As part of the procedure, the developer must submit a formal demolition application together with required design plans and technical studies.
Demolition was targeted for completion by the end of this year.
The two remaining blocks have stood abandoned since the Highland Towers tragedy on Dec 11, 1993, when a neighbouring block collapsed, killing 48 people.
