Selangor government has recognised employers, organisations and individuals for their efforts to promote inclusive employment and sustainable career opportunities for persons with disabilities (OKU).

The recognition came at the inaugural Selangor Disability Inclusion Awards 2026 held in Klang, organised by Selangor Disability Action Council (MTOS) and Yayasan Insan Istimewa Selangor (Yanis).

State women empowerment and welfare committee chairman Anfaal Saari said employment opportunities for the OKU community should not be measured solely by quotas.

Anfaal, who is also Yanis chairman, said greater emphasis should be placed on workplace quality, career progression and an employer’s ability to develop the full potential of disabled employees.

“These awards reflect the state government’s commitment to encouraging more government agencies and private companies to adopt inclusive employment policies.

“Disability-friendly workplaces also help create more flexible and conducive working environments,” she said in a Bernama report.

The awards ceremony, themed “Recognising Potential, Empowering Inclusivity”, was opened by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Also present were MTOS chairman Danial Al-Rashid Haron Aminar Rashid and Yanis chief executive officer Kamarul Hisham Yeop Hashim.

Anfaal said 12 awards across four main categories were presented to recognise employers, educational organisations, local authorities and outstanding individuals with disabilities.

She said the Inclusive Employer Award recognised private companies and organisations committed to hiring persons with disabilities and supporting their welfare, while the Inclusive Personality Award honoured individuals who demonstrated outstanding performance, discipline and positive contributions to their organisations.

“The Special Inclusive Local Authority Award recognised local councils that provide training, skills development and disability-friendly workplaces.

“Meanwhile, the Special Selangor District Education Office Award honoured district education offices that demonstrated best practices in placement, support and inclusive education initiatives in the workplace,” she said.

Anfaal said the state government hoped to establish the awards as an annual event and a benchmark for best practices in social inclusion and equal opportunities.

“The awards recognise employers who challenge stigma and also OKU individuals who demonstrate that physical or sensory limitations do not prevent them from contributing their talents.

“It also highlights MTOS’ important role in implementing the Selangor Disability Policy and its 2026-2030 Action Plan,” she added.

According to Yanis’ social media post, award recipients included Petaling Jaya City Council in the local authority category and Prof Dr Ruzita Mohd Amin from International Islamic University Malaysia in the Inclusive Personality Award category.
