Rail upgrades needed to meet Rawang growth

BETTER rail links to Rawang, including an eventual Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) extension and more frequent train services, are among measures its assemblyman Chua Wei Kiat hopes will be considered under Selangor Budget 2027.

He said population growth and development extending towards Hulu Selangor had increased pressure on transport and other public facilities.

“I hope there will be an MRT service to Rawang. Perhaps five or 10 years from now, it can become a reality,” he said.

Chua also called for discussions on improving Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd services, saying trains through Rawang could be as infrequent as once an hour during off-peak periods.

He said insufficient public transport was contributing to traffic congestion as the population and development in the area continued to grow.

He said greater attention should also be given to facilities for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, noting that recreational and exercise facilities were still largely geared towards children and younger people.

“Preparations have to start now. We cannot wait until Selangor becomes an ageing state before we start doing something,” he said during a visit to Kampung Kenanga, where an abandoned site was turned into an open hall thanks to RM150,000 government funding.

Chua said RM100,000 was allocated under the Sejati Madani programme last year for construction of the roof.

Another RM50,000 under Projek Selangor Penyayang (PSP) this year was used for floor tiling, a wall behind the stage and ceiling works at an enclosed hall next door.

The site previously contained an abandoned building, and discussions were held over the past two years on how the space could be put to better use.

“Eventually, we managed to develop a space like this so the community can use it for programmes and gatherings,” he said of the open hall officially named Dewan Sejati Madani Kampung Kenanga.

Kampung Kenanga Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) chairman and village head Sukria Yahya said 10 programmes had already been held at the hall including weddings, school activities and religious events.

Chua said further improvements could be carried out in stages, including the installation of a large fan to make the hall more comfortable.

Also present was Chua’s political secretary, Jackson Tan.
